Glowing Skin

Fresh, healthy skin hides beneath the dead surface layer, and microdermabrasion can uncover it immediately without risking scarring or other side effects. Microdermabrasion can provide an instant boost if your skin seems dull or shows signs of wrinkles, fine lines, acne, or pigmentation irregularities. At MG Plastic Surgery, we deliver exceptional skin rejuvenation to women and men in Scottsdale, Arizona.

How Does It Work?

The exfoliation process of microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to gently remove dead skin cells on the outer dermal layer, revealing the softer, smoother skin underneath. The handheld microdermabrasion device gently works the crystals into your skin so that skin cells can be removed from the face and neck without damaging the fresh skin below. Microdermabrasion most often smooths the following skin conditions:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Rosacea
  • Brown spots
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation

Preparation for Your Appointment

To prepare for your microdermabrasion treatment, you must stop taking the following medications one week prior to your appointment:

  • Retinol products, such as Renova, Retin-A (Tretinoin), Tazorac, or Differin
  • Hydroxy acid-containing products, such as salicylic acid (BHA), glycolic acid (AHA), or benzoyl peroxide
  • Exfoliating products that may dry or irritate the skin

Additional considerations that may affect your treatment include:

  • Open wounds, inflammatory rosacea, or highly sensitive skin
  • Herpes Simplex blisters or cold sores – anti-viral medication taken prior to treatment may be necessary
  • Radiation or chemotherapy
  • Autoimmune disease (such as psoriasis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, etc.) or a weakened immune system
  • Use of Accutane within one year
  • Lengthy exposure to the sun three days before or after treatment
  • Topical steroid usage up to three days before treatment
  • Having treated the area with depilatories, waxing, or electrolysis within a week prior to treatment

What Happens During the Procedure?

One of our expert professionals will carefully evaluate your skin to ensure optimal results from the treatment. The entire microdermabrasion procedure can be performed in several minutes to an hour, depending on the extent of the treatment. A motorized device made up of a burr that contains crystal particles scrapes the outermost skin layer safely and gently until the imperfections are cleared away. After your treatment, you will see tighter, brighter, more youthful skin.

Recovery & Results

Because microdermabrasion requires no downtime, you can resume your daily routine after your appointment without limitations. You may experience some redness, tingling, and swelling following the treatment, which will resolve within one week. Your skin may be dry and flaky as dead cells fall away.

Your practitioner at MG Plastic Surgery will recommend a moisturizer to hydrate your skin as it heals. Protective sunscreen will also be vital, as the skin tends to be sensitive to sunlight after a microdermabrasion treatment. The results will shine through as your skin heals more each day following your exfoliation.
